Directive (EU) 2023/2673, Art. 11a CRD

The online withdrawal button under EU law

The EU has amended the Consumer Rights Directive: online shops must let consumers withdraw from a contract online, through a withdrawal function on their website. This guide summarises the EU rule and shows where each country stands. It is general information, not legal advice.

The EU rule and its official text

The rule was introduced by Directive (EU) 2023/2673, Art. 11a CRD. The official text is published on EUR-Lex; below are the wording of the withdrawal button and of the confirmation step in the English version of the directive.

Button wording, dates and legal references on this site come from our country registry, which lists its sources and the date of the last check.

What the withdrawal function has to do

In short, the directive describes these elements. National laws transpose them and can add details, so always check the rules of your country.
  1. A clearly labelled function

The function carries an unambiguous label such as withdraw from contract here (wording of the EU directive, pending our legal verification), or equivalent wording. Each country sets the wording in its own language.
  2. Visible for the whole withdrawal period

It is displayed prominently and is easy to reach on the online interface for as long as the consumer can withdraw.
  3. Only the necessary details

The consumer gives or confirms their name, details that identify the contract, such as the order number, and the electronic means for the confirmation, such as an email address.
  4. A separate confirmation step

A second, separate function lets the consumer confirm the withdrawal statement, labelled for example confirm withdrawal (wording of the EU directive, pending our legal verification).
  5. An acknowledgement on a durable medium

The trader acknowledges receipt without undue delay on a durable medium such as an email, including the content of the statement and the date and time it was submitted.

National wording, dates and penalties differ

Each member state puts the rule into its own law. The exact button wording, the date from which it applies and the penalties differ by country. Our registry records them with their sources and marks wording that a lawyer has not verified yet; until then, the Clawzia widget shows the wording of the EU directive in the consumer's language.

Status in each EU country

Generated from our country registry: the status of the national law, the date from which it applies, the legal reference and whether we have verified the national button wording. Registry last checked on 25 September 2026.

Country pages in the local language

For these countries we publish pages in the local language with the national facts, the wording in the law and the sources.

Questions about the rule

Which shops does the rule concern?

It concerns contracts that consumers conclude at a distance through an online interface, such as a website or an app, and that come with a right of withdrawal. Whether and from when it applies to your shop depends on the law of the countries you sell to and on your contracts: check the table above and ask your lawyer.

Which wording must the button show?

The directive gives the wording in each EU language, and national laws may set their own. Where our registry has national wording, our country pages show it quoted, with its verification status and sources. Ask your lawyer which wording your shop must use.

What happens if a shop has no withdrawal function?

The consequences are set by national law and differ by country. Our country pages summarise the penalties recorded in our registry, with links to the sources.

Does the function replace my withdrawal information?

No. It is an additional way for consumers to withdraw. Your other information duties, such as the withdrawal information in your terms, remain.

Add the withdrawal function to your shop

Clawzia shows the button with the wording from our registry, runs the two-step form, sends the confirmation email and keeps a verifiable record of every withdrawal.
